When Is the Right Time for Cataract Surgery?

3/3/2026

If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts, you may be wondering whether it’s time to consider cataract surgery — or if you can safely wait.  At Northern Virginia Eye Physicians in Fairfax, VA, this is one of the most common questions we hear from our patients.

What we tell patients is that, quite simply, the right time for cataract surgery depends on how your vision is affecting your daily life.  Let’s take a closer look at what that means.

What Is a Cataract?

A cataract develops as a natural part of aging and is when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy over time.  This clouding prevents light from properly focusing on the retina, leading to blurred or distorted vision.

Cataracts are extremely common as we age. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision impairment in adults over 60. Fortunately, cataract surgery is a highly effective treatment to address cataracts and restore our best possible vision.

Signs It May Be Time for Cataract Surgery

Just because you’ve been told you have cataracts doesn’t mean it’s necessarily time for surgery.  Surgery becomes appropriate when your symptoms begin interfering with your quality of life.

Here are common signs it may be time to consider cataract surgery:

1. Blurry or Cloudy Vision
If your vision appears hazy or dim — even after updating your glasses — cataracts may be progressing.

2. Difficulty Driving at Night
Glare, halos, and starbursts around headlights are classic cataract symptoms. If night driving feels unsafe, this is an important signal.

3. Increased Light Sensitivity
Bright sunlight or indoor lighting may feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.

4. Frequent Prescription Changes
If you’re updating your glasses often but still struggling to see clearly, cataracts could be the underlying cause.

5. Colors Look Faded
Cataracts can gradually make colors appear yellowed or dull.

When everyday tasks like reading, cooking, working on a computer, or recognizing faces become frustrating, it may be time to consider cataract surgery.

Do Cataracts Have to Be “Ripe” Before Surgery?

Years ago, patients were advised to wait until cataracts were “mature” or “ripe."  With advancements in surgical techniques, determining the timing of surgery has evolved to be based not just on how “ripe” a cataract may be, but more importantly, on the impact the cataract may be having on your vision.  In some cases, delaying surgery too long can make the procedure more complex — this situation is less likely to occur in patients who keep up with regular eye exams.

At our Fairfax office, we can evaluate your cataracts and discuss with you the appropriate timing for surgery based on factors such as:

  • Your visual needs
  • Your overall eye health
  • Your health status
  • The density of the cataract

This decision is personalized and not based on an arbitrary timeline.  For most people, there is often some flexibility in the best timing for surgery, which our surgeon can discuss with you.

How Cataract Surgery Improves Quality of Life

The overall goal of surgery is to improve vision so that you can once again enjoy your daily activities with restored clear vision.  Patients often tell us they didn’t realize just how much their vision had deteriorated until after surgery.

Common improvements include:

  • Clearer, sharper vision
  • Brighter, more vibrant colors
  • Improved night driving
  • Greater confidence in daily activities
  • Enhanced independence

For many, cataract surgery can significantly improve quality of life — restoring both clarity and confidence in our daily activities.

How to Know If You’re Ready

Ask yourself:

  • Is my vision limiting my lifestyle?
  • Do I avoid driving at night?
  • Are daily tasks becoming frustrating?
  • Do I feel less confident because of my eyesight?

If the answer is yes, it may be time to explore cataract surgery.  The best way to determine this is through a comprehensive eye exam and cataract consultation.
